Coalition Seeks Tax Reform in Alabama

A group of Alabama non-profit organizations has formed a tax policy coalition in order to develop strategies for lobbying for comprehensive revenue-positive tax reform in the state. The members believe that a fair and equitable tax system is necessary in order to provide each child in Alabama with a quality education. Non-profits involved in the coalition include: A+, Alabama ARISE, VOICES for Alabama's Children, the Alabama PTA, the Community Action Agency Association, and representatives from the Methodist, Episcopal, and Baptist Churches.

Focus on tax reform as a way of funding school improvement is an emerging trend in Alabama. In 2001, Alabama Governor Don Siegelman challenged the legislature to close corporate loopholes that were costing the state's Education Trust hundreds of millions of dollars. Although his plan was not adopted by the legislature, Governor Siegelman continues to speak out in favor of a fair tax system to finance the schools.
