Grow
Your Own Illinois
Grow Your Own Illinois is a project of the Illinois
State Board of Education and the Chicago Learning Campaign,
aimed at promoting the development of “Grow Your
Own Teachers” projects. It is an innovative partnership
of community organizations, higher education institutions,
and school districts that supports parents, community
members, and paraprofessionals in low-income communities
to become highly qualified teachers. Its stated goals
are: (1) to create a pipeline of highly qualified teachers
of color; (2) to improve teacher retention in low-income
schools; (3) to recruit for hard-to-staff schools and
hard-to-fill positions; and (4) to increase cultural
competence and community connections of teachers.

Neighborhood
Capital Budget Group
The Neighborhood Capital Budget Group describes itself
as a coalition of nearly 200 community-based organizations
and local economic development groups in Chicago dedicated
to improving the city's neighborhoods through well-planned,
targeted public investment. Through advocacy and policy
research, NCBG aims to put public wealth to work more
effectively and equitably. The Group tracks the Chicago
Public Schools' spending on construction and collects
data about "best practices" in other states
for planning and financing facilities funding and repairs.
The Group uses its research to advocate for better school
facility site seclection and building design, as well
as a ranking system to set funding priorities with input
from the community.
