Grow Your Own Illinois

Grow Your Own Illinois is a project of the Illinois State Board of Education and the Chicago Learning Campaign, aimed at promoting the development of “Grow Your Own Teachers” projects. It is an innovative partnership of community organizations, higher education institutions, and school districts that supports parents, community members, and paraprofessionals in low-income communities to become highly qualified teachers. Its stated goals are: (1) to create a pipeline of highly qualified teachers of color; (2) to improve teacher retention in low-income schools; (3) to recruit for hard-to-staff schools and hard-to-fill positions; and (4) to increase cultural competence and community connections of teachers.

Illinois Education and Research Council (IERC)

The Illinois Education and Research Council, established in 2000 and affiliated with Southern Illinois University, describes its mission as promotion of and support for education research and evaluation and policy analysis. The Council states that it works closely with the Joint Education Committee, which is chaired by the deputy governor for education and workforce development, and that it assists the Governor's Council on Educator Quality, as well as other educational initiatives in Illinois. Current projects and publications focus on teacher training and quality.

Neighborhood Capital Budget Group

The Neighborhood Capital Budget Group describes itself as a coalition of nearly 200 community-based organizations and local economic development groups in Chicago dedicated to improving the city's neighborhoods through well-planned, targeted public investment. Through advocacy and policy research, NCBG aims to put public wealth to work more effectively and equitably. The Group tracks the Chicago Public Schools' spending on construction and collects data about "best practices" in other states for planning and financing facilities funding and repairs. The Group uses its research to advocate for better school facility site seclection and building design, as well as a ranking system to set funding priorities with input from the community.
